Understanding the language around you allows you more than understanding: it allows you to engage socially and politically with your world. No one should be forced to learn another language but no one should be denied the opportunity. The more languages we can speak and understand, even just a little, the more people in the world we can connect to.
In Stoughton there is English language instruction for adult learners through:
- The Adult Basic Education program of Massasoit Community College, classes meet at Stoughton High School on Tuesdays and Thursday evenings during the academic year. New student intakes are the first Tuesday of each month at 5:30pm (Carmel teaches the advanced-intermediate class)
- The Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts program at the Stoughton Public Library. Community volunteers are trained to meet one-on-one and tutor an adult who is learning/improving English or working on literacy. (Carmel is a volunteer tutor.)
- The New England Community Center offers English classes (for a fee)
If you know other adult English classes in the area, let us know and we will add them to this list.
If you know of language exchange groups (where native speakers of different languages can come together to learn from each other and improve skills in various languages) please let us know of those as well!
